The Difference Between Light, Medium, and Dark Roasted Coffee Beans

Coffee is a popular drink on the Starbucks menu, and different degrees of roasting will bring different flavors and tastes to coffee beans. In this article, we will explore the effects of light, medium, and dark roasting on coffee beans.

Light Roast

Light roasting means that the coffee beans are heated to a lower temperature, usually between 180°C and 205°C. This degree of roasting takes a relatively short time, usually only 10 to 12 minutes.

After light processing, the coffee beans retain most of their original flavor and characteristics. They usually have a bright and fresh taste with a strong and fragrant fruity aroma. Because they are not exposed to high temperatures too much, these beans tend to have a higher moisture content and retain a certain degree of original acidity.

Because of its relatively light color, the color is also light yellow or golden yellow when it is brewed in the cup. If you like fresh and acidic coffee, lightly roasted beans may be your first choice.

Medium Roast

Medium roast is a level between light and dark. In this process, the coffee beans are heated to between 205°C and 220°C and take 12 to 14 minutes.

Compared to light processing, medium roasting changes the original flavor of coffee beans more. They lose some fruity aroma and acidity, but at the same time gain a richer and more balanced taste. This degree of roasting usually forms a layer of oil on the surface of the coffee beans and the color becomes darker brown.

Medium roasted coffee has a spicy, chocolatey or nutty flavor with a moderate acidity. If you like a balanced coffee with a slightly bittersweet taste, medium roasting is a good choice.

Dark roast

Dark roasting is a process in which the coffee beans are heated to a higher temperature, usually between 220°C and 240°C, and takes between 14 and 16 minutes.

This level of roasting forms a layer of oil on the surface of the coffee beans, and the color changes to a very dark brown or even black. Due to long-term exposure to high temperatures, the coffee beans lose most of their original flavor and acidity.

Dark roasting produces coffee with a strong, bitter and caramelized flavor. They often have a spicy or woody taste, and the acidity is almost completely gone. If you like a strong, bitter coffee with a distinct caramelized flavor, then choosing a dark roast will satisfy your strong flavor needs.

Summarize

Light, medium and dark roasting give coffee beans different characteristics and flavors. Slightly processed coffee beans retain their original fruity aroma and acidity; medium roasting produces a balanced taste and chocolate or nutty flavors; and dark roasting produces a rich, bitter and caramelized flavor.

Choosing coffee beans that suit your taste is a personal preference. You can choose beans with different degrees of roasting according to your preference for coffee flavor. Whether you like fresh and sour, balanced and sweet, or rich and bitter, there is always a degree that suits you.
