Why is Americano considered Italian coffee?

It is said that during the First World War, American soldiers first tasted espresso in Italian cafes. They were puzzled by the bitter and sour strong coffee and found it unacceptable, so they added water to dilute it. Over time, Italian baristas used this method to make coffee for American soldiers, but Italians despised it and described the taste of espresso diluted with water as being like pot water. They named it Americano, which means American coffee in Chinese. Although it is called Americano, it is still Italian coffee because it is made by adding water to espresso.

However, apart from Italians, not many people can accept such a strong-flavored coffee, which is why American coffee can be passed down to this day and is far more popular than espresso. It is worth mentioning that even today, if you order American coffee in Italy, you may be laughed at, but you can choose American coffee with confidence in coffee shops in China or other countries.

After working as a barista for many years, I occasionally encounter these two situations.

One is that the customer is watching the barista making Americano and suddenly becomes unhappy and asks the barista why he added water to his coffee...

Another situation is when a customer orders an espresso. When the coffee is served, the customer will instantly suspect that he or she has either entered a deceptive shop or met a black-hearted barista, otherwise why others have a large cup while he or she can only have a gulp.

The fact is, according to international standards, the volume of a single espresso is 30 ml, and a double espresso is 60 ml. The barista did not cut corners. This also verifies the saying that the essence is concentrated. In fact, the coffee content is the same. Don't forget that those large cups of coffee are added with water, milk and other ingredients.

Why do latte and cappuccino look the same?

You might be wondering if this is just laziness and using the same cup of coffee?

In fact, the ingredients of latte and cappuccino are the same, but the proportions of the ingredients are different. A cup of cappuccino is composed of 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk and 1/3 milk foam. The thickness of the milk foam should be at least 2cm. The coffee tastes stronger. Some people will sprinkle some cinnamon powder or chocolate powder to increase the flavor.

Latte and cappuccino have the same espresso content, but the difference is that they add a lot of milk and a small amount of milk foam, that is, coffee-flavored milk, which has a smoother taste.

So, how did the names of coffee such as latte and cappuccino come about?

Latte means "milk" in Italian. If you order a latte in an Italian coffee shop, the barista will serve you a cup of milk. In fact, the full name of latte should be Caffè Latte, which refers to milk coffee. In China, it is simply called latte.

The origin of the name of cappuccino is quite interesting. At that time, Italians found that after espresso, milk and milk foam were mixed, the circle around the cup was coffee color, and there were pointed milk foam on top, which looked like a monk overlooking the Capuchin church wearing dark brown coats and small white pointed hats, so they named this coffee cappuccino.

Nowadays, whether you order a latte or cappuccino, the barista will usually create a latte art on it for you, so it is difficult to tell whether a cup of coffee is a latte or a cappuccino just by looking at it. If you want to check whether the cappuccino you ordered is "authentic" or "fake", just use a small spoon to gently pry open the top layer of milk foam and see if there is only a thin layer of milk foam, then go talk to the barista.

In fact, some coffee shops no longer distinguish between latte and cappuccino, but simply call them milk coffee.

Is Caramel Macchiato just Macchiato with caramel added?

The answer is yes, Caramel Macchiato is just macchiato coffee with caramel added, but it’s not just caramel.

Macchiato is also Italian, meaning "mark, brand", and is made by adding whipped milk foam to espresso. Caramel Macchiato was invented by Starbucks, which first adds vanilla syrup to the bottom of the cup, then adds milk and milk foam, then pours espresso, and finally pours caramel on the surface, named Caramel Macchiato, which means "sweet mark".

The meaning of Caramel Macchiato must be very popular among girls. When you take a sip, you can first taste the sweet caramel flavor, then fall into the aroma of milk and coffee, and finally the sweet aftertaste of vanilla syrup hangs on your lips. The whole cup is layered and full of surprises.
