Pour-over coffee equipment recommendations | A guide to home pour-over coffee equipment

It is easy to brew bad coffee, but it is difficult to brew a good cup of coffee. So does the brewing equipment have an impact on the flavor of coffee? What are the requirements for home hand brewing coffee equipment?

Hand-brewed coffee is currently the most popular brewing method. Compared with other brewing methods, hand-brewed coffee can better highlight the rich aroma and flavor of coffee, and therefore has become the preferred method for many people to brew single-origin coffee.

But there are many factors that affect hand-brewed coffee, such as the quality of the coffee, the extraction of the coffee, the extraction time and the coarseness of the coffee, etc. As long as one small detail is not grasped well, you may miss out on a cup of delicious coffee.

If you want to make a cup of pour-over coffee, you will need at least:

1. A hand brewing kettle

2. A filter cup

3. Filter paper, temperature machine, and scale as consumables

4. Share Pot

5. Coffee beans and grinders

The most fascinating thing about hand-poured coffee, besides the enjoyment of the taste, is to appreciate the elegance, perseverance and professionalism of the craftsman when he holds the pouring pot. Therefore, how to choose a suitable hand-poured pot is particularly important. If you want to do your work well, you must first "manage" your tools. Therefore, before buying a hand-poured pot, in addition to measuring your own abilities and needs, you should also understand the structure of various tools, that is, the characteristics of each hand-poured pot, so that it is easier to find a tool that suits you.

Here are a few hand brewing tools that I recommend buying in the early stages. The price difference is not big, don’t waste your money, you know! !

Hand brewing kettle

The hand-pour kettle is the core of the hand-pour equipment. There are many varieties, and the style is naturally in line with personal aesthetics. I don’t recommend the popular Hario VKB because it is not easy to use.

HARIO Long Spout Kettle Cloud Kettle 1L/1.2L

Reference price: (depending on the size of the pot) price 220-400

Practicality: It is said to be the most commonly used hand-brewed kettle in coffee shops. It feels light and the handle is not hot at all. The cloud kettle has a cute shape, and the handshake kettle has a handle that feels integrated.

Material: Stainless steel

Recommended hand-washing method: fast flushing

Coffee Bean Grinder

The coffee bean grinder is the most important of all coffee brewing tools. Whether it is electric or hand-cranked, the quality of coffee powder produced by a grinder is much better. The ideal time to grind coffee beans is just before brewing. This can effectively improve the quality of coffee, because ground coffee easily oxidizes and loses its aroma, especially if it is not properly stored, the coffee powder will change its taste. Therefore, coffee powder that has been left for a long time cannot brew into fragrant coffee.

How to choose a grinder:

First of all, you have to know what kind of coffee you want to drink. Usually, there are two types of coffee, namely drip coffee and espresso. The former has a light taste, simple bean grinder equipment and is relatively cheap, while the latter has a strong taste and is often paired with milk drinks, and the bean grinder is also more expensive.

Grinding is the prerequisite for extraction. A good grinder pursues the stability of the ratio of coarse and fine powder in coffee powder. Cheap grinders may not be able to achieve the ratio of coarse and fine powder in coffee powder, so the coffee powder ground by such grinders cannot be extracted normally.

The price of a home coffee grinder is usually not very high. The conical burr coffee grinder is the first choice for home hand-brewed coffee. The conical burr coffee grinder can grind coffee beans into particles of equal size. Uneven-sized coffee powder will cause insufficient or excessive extraction of coffee, thus affecting the flavor of the coffee.

thermometer

The control of water temperature is also a major factor affecting brewing. Are you very sensitive to the temperature difference? This will determine whether you should choose a pointer or digital thermometer. But the general recommendation is to buy a digital thermometer directly!

pointer

If you are a person who has a high tolerance for temperature differences, you can use a pointer thermometer. The disadvantage is that it is difficult to observe and it is difficult to accurately see the temperature changes; if you are still in an environment with unstable temperature, the pointer type cannot change immediately, which will make your water temperature inaccurate.

number

The advantages are that the display panel is large and the temperature difference changes instantly. If you are a friend who requires speed and convenience, then you should use a digital thermometer! The disadvantage is that the battery needs to be replaced, and it is easy to break if the quality is poor.

Electronic weighing instrument

Brewing coffee requires a certain brewing ratio. The amount of water needed depends on the amount of coffee powder used. Therefore, it is generally not recommended to use a bean spoon to measure, because the coffee and water need to be weighed during the coffee brewing process, and the different sizes of each bean will cause extraction errors.

One cup of hand-brewed coffee requires 15 grams of beans. It is best to weigh it with an electronic scale accurate to 0.1. The electronic scale is also convenient for checking the amount of water injected when pouring water. The golden ratio of coffee to water is generally 10 grams of coffee added to 200 milliliters of hot water. Some people use 15 grams of coffee with 150 milliliters of water. For those with a lighter taste, it is recommended to dilute it slightly with a ratio of 1:13 to 1:17. For those with a heavier taste, you can use a ratio of 1:10 to 1:12.

Filter cup

There are many types of filter cups, mainly divided into trapezoidal and conical filter cups, which can be used with filter paper, metal filter mesh or filter cloth for brewing. No matter which one, they are not only different in appearance, but different filter cups have different characteristics. The design of each detail also affects the flow rate, extraction time, and the taste of coffee. Each device is different, so choosing a good filter cup is also the key to brewing a cup of delicious hand-brewed coffee.

The V60 filter cup produced by Japan's Hario is an unbeatable model on the market and has long been used by most coffee shops for commercial brewing. The V60 is also considered to be one of the coffee filters that can best extract the perfect flavor.

Wave filter cup (cake filter cup)-the easiest to get

This is perfect for beginners! The special design of the filter paper wave replaces the high flow rate caused by the general filter paper being too close to the filter cup. The flat bottom design of the filter cup allows the coffee to be evenly extracted. The brewed coffee bean flavor has the best balance of proportions. The biggest disadvantage may be that the filter paper is too expensive, about twice the price of ordinary filter paper.

In addition, the smart filter cup is also a good choice. Using a smart filter cup does not require any skills, and the brewing process is relatively simple.

If you want to brew a good cup of coffee, in addition to the conditions of the coffee beans themselves, it is also important to use good coffee utensils.
