Whether you are a newbie or someone who has decided to switch from instant coffee to freshly ground coffee, if you still don’t know how to find the right coffee beans for you, the best way is to go to your favorite coffee shop and ask the local barista or roaster for advice. They know coffee beans inside out and can give you pointers, and they will even generously share some beans for you to try. On the other hand, there are a wide variety of choices online, and you can also buy beans online and try them yourself, whether they are raw or roasted.

Breaking the price dilemma

Although specialty coffee is generally more expensive and of better quality than general commercial coffee, it is important to remember that in the world of specialty coffee, the principle of "you get what you pay for" may not always hold true. For example, island coffee from Jamaica (Blue Mountain) or Hawaii (Kona) is generally more expensive, not because of its outstanding flavor, but because of its higher production costs and lower yields.

Ask your local barista or coffee roaster; they know everything about coffee beans and can give you some pointers.

Figure out how to drink it

Specialty coffee beans are usually divided into two types: suitable for espresso and hand-poured, so before choosing, you should decide how you plan to drink it. Hand-poured coffee beans have a lighter taste and can bring out a more complex flavor. They are best suited for slow drip brewing. Beans used for espresso have a darker color and a richer flavor, and can withstand the high-pressure extraction of a coffee machine.

Also, single-origin coffee is not suitable for adding milk, because milk will destroy the delicate flavor of the coffee itself. Therefore, it is best to use Robusta mixed beans or single varieties with stronger and fuller flavors such as Brazilian coffee to make latte or cappuccino.

Drink it while it's fresh

When buying coffee beans, pay attention to the roasting date marked on the bag. There are many different opinions about the best tasting period of coffee, but it is generally believed that roasted beans need one to four days to mature, and reach the peak of flavor between the fifth and tenth days. The best tasting period is within three weeks from the roasting date. However, as the old saying goes, the best way to taste coffee is to drink it yourself. Some coffees may be at their best earlier or later, so the key lies in the quality of the beans themselves and the roasting and brewing methods.

Buy Whole Beans

Grinding beans can release the flavor of beans quickly and in large quantities in a short period of time, but it also means that the best tasting period will be shortened and it will soon deteriorate - usually only for a few hours. The ground beans will lose most of their flavor complexity within a day and become bland in less than a week. It is recommended to buy a grinder and grind and brew the coffee according to the amount of coffee used each time, but if you really, really don't want to go to great lengths, you can only buy the freshest ground coffee beans possible.

Keep it safe

Now that you've finally found the right beans, you need to store them well. You can buy a special bean storage jar, but honestly, it's not necessary. Just seal the beans and completely isolate them from air and heat. Buy only enough for one to two weeks at a time. Ideally, store them in sealed glass or ceramic containers in a cool place. But no matter what others suggest, don't put them in the refrigerator or freezer, because the beans will absorb moisture and other flavors, causing the flavor to lose. Then your double espresso will taste stale, like the pizza that was not finished last Thursday.
