Typica

Typica is a cultivated tall variety of Arabica coffee that originated from Yemen to Java and began to spread on the island of Java in the early 18th century.

The oldest native variety in Ethiopia, all Arabica is derived from Typica. Typica has bronze top leaves and oval or thin pointed beans; it has an elegant flavor, but is weak, has poor disease resistance, and produces less fruit. Jamaican Blue Mountain, Sumatra Mandheling, Hawaiian Kona and other excellent estate beans are all Typica.

The plant was very similar to what we call Java today, with bronze-tipped leaves, large fruit and seeds, very low yields, and susceptible to all major pests and diseases.

Typica cultivars

Java

Java has long berries and bronze leaves and is believed to be a descendant of coffee introduced to Java from Yemen. From Java, the variety was first brought to a neighboring island (Timor) and then to East Africa (Cameroon), where it began to be cultivated in 1980. It was introduced to Central America by CIRAD (Centre for International Agricultural Research and Development). In Cameroon, the variety is known for its moderate yield and good resistance to coffee berry disease.

Maragogype

A mutant of Typica, first discovered in Brazil in 1870. The fruit is large, elongated, and slightly twisted, and the plant has long internodes and large leaves. The yield is relatively low.

Kent

It is believed to be a tall Typica variety that originated in the Kent region of India. This variety has been widely grown in India since 1930. There is a variety of this variety called K7, which is more common in Kenya and is the most rust-resistant coffee bean variety.
