Green coffee beans: How much do you know about the entire process from origin to roasting?

Coffee beans are a common beverage ingredient in our daily lives. They go through the entire process from origin to roasting to become the coffee we love. Below I will introduce this process to you with the focus on raw coffee beans.

First of all, the origin of coffee beans is mainly distributed in Asia, Africa and South America. These places have suitable climate conditions, fertile soil, and the altitude also has an important influence on the growth of coffee trees. After the coffee trees grown in these environments bear fruit, farmers will pick them.

After harvesting, farmers will process the ripe fruits. There are usually two processing methods: dry method and wet method. The dry method is to dry the whole fruit until the moisture content is reduced; the wet method is to remove the peel and pulp first, then wash it with water and ferment it for a period of time.

Next, the unroasted, unprocessed coffee beans known as "green beans" are processed and need to be transported to the global market. Typically, the green beans are packed into large containers or bags and sent to coffee roasters by ship, truck, etc.

Once they arrive at the roastery, the green beans will go through a series of processing steps. The first is washing and screening to remove impurities and defectives. Then comes the roasting process, which has a crucial impact on the flavor and aroma of the coffee beans. Different degrees of roasting will bring different tastes of coffee.

Finally, after roasting, the coffee beans need to be cooled, packaged, labeled, etc. Then they can be sold to consumers or supplied to various catering institutions.

In summary, the whole process from origin to roasting involves multiple links: picking, processing, transportation, cleaning and screening, roasting and packaging, etc. Each link has an important impact on the quality of the final product. Therefore, when enjoying delicious coffee, we should also thank those who work hard and silently behind the scenes.
