Coffee Basics Overview

Coffee is a popular beverage with a unique flavor and stimulating effects. In this article, we'll cover the basics of coffee, including where the beans come from, the roasting process, brewing methods, and some common types of coffee.

1. Coffee Beans

Coffee beans are the raw material for making coffee. They usually come from two main varieties: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans have higher quality and more complex flavor, while Robusta beans are more bitter and strong.

When buying coffee beans, you can choose different origins or blends according to your personal taste preferences. Generally speaking, single-origin coffee will have a more obvious regional flavor, while blends create a balanced and complex taste through a combination of different origins or varieties.

2. Baking process

Roasting is the process of heating coffee beans to a specific temperature to evaporate the water inside and produce chemical changes. Different degrees of roasting will give coffee different flavors and tastes.

Light roast usually retains the original acidity and floral aroma of coffee beans, but produces relatively less bitter taste. Medium roast is more balanced, with certain acidity and sweetness. Dark roast brings a richer, bitter and cocoa flavor.

3. Brewing method

Brewing is the process of bringing coffee into contact with water to extract the dissolved substances in it. Here are a few common brewing methods:

- Drip method: coarse or medium ground coffee is placed in a paper filter or metal mesh funnel and boiling water is poured through it gradually, collecting in a container below.

- French Press: Place coarsely ground coffee into a French press, add hot water and stir, then slowly press the piston down to separate the coffee grounds.

- Espresso: A special espresso machine is used to create a short cup of strong Italian coffee by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee particles using high pressure steam.

4. Common types of coffee

In addition to the basics, we also need to understand some common types of coffee:

- Espresso: A small shot of coffee brewed under high pressure to achieve a strong, rich, creamy flavor. It is the basis for many other drinks, such as cappuccino and latte.

- Pour Over: This method usually uses a drip filter or a pour over pot to brew high-quality beans from a single origin or a specific flavor blend. It can highlight the flavor characteristics of the beans themselves and provide a clearer and lighter taste of coffee.

- Cappuccino: It is a mixture of espresso, steamed milk and milk foam in a specific ratio. It usually has a balanced taste, with both a strong coffee flavor and a rich milk aroma.

These are just some of the common coffee types, and there are many other innovative and specialty drinks on the market to choose from.

in conclusion

In this article, we have taken a look at the basics of coffee. From choosing the right beans to mastering different roasting levels and brewing methods, these can help us better enjoy a cup of delicious coffee.
