Coffee categories: espresso, filter and cold brew

Espresso

Espresso is a type of coffee made with a small amount of water and a large amount of ground coffee. It usually has a strong and rich flavor because the water is in contact with the ground coffee for a shorter time during the production process, allowing more of the coffee essence to be extracted.

The most common way to make espresso is with an espresso machine. This machine makes espresso by injecting high-pressure steam into a cup of finely ground coffee powder through a pressure pump. Under high pressure, the water comes into full contact with the coffee powder and quickly extracts most of the soluble substances.

Due to its strong and complex taste, espresso is often used to make various specialty drinks, such as latte, cappuccino and Americano, etc. It can also be drunk alone and add appropriate amount of milk or sugar to adjust the taste.

Filter coffee

Filtered (or drip) coffee making method commonly used in homes and offices. This method uses a paper or metal mesh filter to slowly pass hot water through the coffee grounds, allowing the water to fully contact the coffee grounds and gradually extract the flavor of the coffee.

Compared to espresso, filter coffee usually has a softer taste and mellower aroma. Due to the longer contact with water during the production process, filter coffee can better retain the oils and aromatic substances in the coffee beans.

Common blister-style brewing tools include hand-poured pots, drip machines, and French press pots. These tools can adjust the extraction time, temperature, and ratio to control the taste according to personal preference.

Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brew (also known as cold pour) is a method of mixing finely ground coffee with cold boiled water and letting it sit for several hours to several days before filtering to obtain a concentrated liquid. This method is done at a low temperature, which can better preserve the aroma and acidity in the coffee beans.

Cold brew coffee usually has a more balanced and soft taste, unlike espresso, which has a strong bitter taste. It can also be used to make various cold drinks, such as iced coffee, iced latte, etc.

Compared with the other two methods, cold brew takes longer to make and requires some special equipment, such as a slow dripper or a special filter. However, due to its unique flavor and taste, it is becoming more and more popular among some people who like to try new things.
