After about three years, the coffee trees begin to flower. This is an exciting time because farmers know the coffee beans are about to ripen. They wait for the cherries to turn red, which means the beans are ready to be picked.

Coffee bean harvesting and processing

Once the best time to pick is determined, farmers begin harvesting the coffee cherries, often using hand picking methods to ensure only the right ripeness is selected.

Next comes the process of processing the coffee beans. First, farmers will wash the harvested fruits in a tank and remove the incomplete or defective parts. Then, they will dry the clean fruits in the sun.

Once completely dried, farmers can remove the outer pericarp and inner husk and obtain what we know as “green beans.” These green beans are then packaged and shipped around the world.

From green beans to tasting

When the green beans arrive at their destination, they need to go through a series of processing steps to become the coffee we love. First, the green beans will go through the roasting process. This step is very critical because it determines the flavor and taste of the coffee.

Next comes the grinding stage, where farmers or professional baristas grind the roasted beans into particles of varying coarseness to suit different ways of brewing coffee.

Finally, we can taste delicious coffee! Whether it is rich and fragrant or light and soft, each cup represents the hard work and wisdom of countless people in the entire planting, picking and processing process.
