Which is better, American machine, syphon pot, French press, hand pour, Italian machine, or Moka pot?

People often ask:

Do different brewing methods require different coffee beans? What is the difference between the taste of the same coffee beans brewed with an Americano and a siphon? Which utensil is best for brewing coffee at home?

In order to answer these questions, Teacher Cha has started writing the first coffee masterpiece in my life. Don’t worry, I believe it will be completed in three to five years...sorry, just answer the questions well first!

Before giving the answer, let's take a look at the performance of each method in various aspects~

Flavor release

Among all these methods, the French press has the best flavor, which can fully present the original appearance of the coffee. Next, hand pouring, syphon and American coffee machine also perform well.

When you choose a strong espresso machine or moka pot, it means that you need to give up the presentation of the most delicate and fragile aroma of coffee beans to a certain extent.

Richness

The concentration of coffee brewed by a siphon pot is about the same as that of a hand brew, while the French press is slightly stronger. The moka pot is the method that can produce a concentration closest to that of an espresso machine.

Sweet and bitter

If you don't like bitter coffee, using a siphon pot or a mortar pot, both of which are good-looking, might be a bit... asking for trouble.

Hand-brew, American and Italian machines all show a higher degree of acidity than bitterness. Siphon pots have slightly lower acidity and a good sweetness. French press, on the other hand, is very balanced and has a higher sweetness.

Taste

In terms of the richness of the coffee, the stronger the coffee, the richer the taste. Espresso and French press are the most mellow.

The body of American machines and hand-poured coffee is obviously weaker.

Lazy cancer preference

The American coffee machine and French press are undoubtedly the easiest to use. You just need to pour the coffee powder and water. There are not many variables. However, when cleaning, the filter of the French press is easy to get stuck with fine powder, which may require you to spend more time to clean it. Of course, hand brewing is just as easy to clean as the American coffee machine. Just throw the coffee grounds and filter paper into the trash can!

As for siphon pots, moka pots and espresso machines, I can only say one word: trouble, trouble, trouble! Not only are the various variables difficult to control, but cleaning them is also a tiring pace for Virgos.

Shopping Index

The least painful thing to buy is the French press, which is simply a tea brewing device! As for the Italian espresso machine, it is definitely a must-have for the rich, and the spending index is off the charts. Don't think that the siphon pot is more expensive because of its amazing appearance. In fact, there are many hand-poured utensils and the mortar pot is exquisitely made. The cost level of these brewing methods is comparable.

So, Q&A time...

Which brewing method is best?

Do you think I would say: Each has its pros and cons...?

You are wrong! Teacher Cha likes French press the most.

Because... let's take a look at the pros and cons of various brewing methods...

Hand pouring

  • Advantages : It looks like a ritual and fun. The brewing method can be said to be completely controlled by people. You can use thin water flow, rough water flow, large impact, long time, short time, and all kinds of variables are under your control. And it is easy to clean!

  • Disadvantages : The stability is very poor (because there are too many variables), so it is the most difficult to get started and learn.

Siphon

  • Advantages : It looks more ceremonial. The stirring method and stirring force will affect the flavor.

  • Disadvantages : For beginners, it is also difficult to master stability, and it is even more difficult to master the water temperature of the coffee. When to plug in the upper pot, what is the water temperature after the water is added to the upper pot, it takes a lot of experiments and experience to accumulate a stable conclusion. And it is made of glass, it is easy to break...

American coffee machine

  • Advantages: Easy to clean and use.

  • Disadvantages: The water temperature of the machine is unstable, and the spray head is not wide enough, resulting in the coffee powder not being properly extracted. Good machines are usually more expensive.

French Press

  • Advantages: Super simple! The error tolerance is very high, which means you can easily brew a cup of professional-grade coffee. As long as you have good coffee beans, freshly ground coffee powder, and the right water temperature, you can fully present the original appearance of the coffee. And it can release oil to a great extent, so that we have a smoother taste when we drink it.

  • Disadvantages: There will be some fine powder, and some people may think that the coffee is not clear enough (but for me, such coffee can be said to have not been retouched, and almost 100% reflects the original appearance of the coffee!) Another serious disadvantage: you must use very good coffee...

Moka Pot

  • Advantages: Apart from being able to brew very strong coffee, it doesn’t seem to have any other advantages…..Ah, also, the moka pot has a variety of shapes and can be collected as a decoration.

  • Disadvantages: It is difficult to control the temperature, the time it takes for water to pass through the coffee powder, and it is difficult to brew good coffee stably.

Italian coffee machine

  • Advantages: It looks very professional. In addition to being able to make familiar drinks such as latte and cappuccino, the most important thing is that drinking espresso will give you a superior feeling~

  • Disadvantages: Too many variables, difficult to produce stable products. And it needs complete maintenance every day. The point is that the price of grinders and coffee machines is more than ten times that of hand brewing equipment!

Which pot goes with which beans?

To this question, I just want to say: Bullshit!

Different brewing methods do have certain requirements for the ratio of coffee powder to water, but as long as the coffee beans are good and the right parameters are used, any method can make a delicious cup of coffee.

Powder-water ratio for different brewing methods:

Comparison of coffee powder grinding coarseness for different brewing methods:

The conclusion is: no matter which method you use, go grind the coffee beans, Teacher Cha is calling you to drink coffee!
