Eight ways to roast coffee beans

Roasting coffee beans is one of the important steps in making delicious coffee. Different roasting methods will give coffee beans different flavors and tastes. This article will introduce eight common coffee bean roasting methods.

1. Light roast

Light roasting means that coffee beans are processed at a lower temperature for a shorter time. This method retains most of the original flavor, making the coffee bright, refreshing, high in acidity, and rich in floral aromas. However, since it is not deeply processed, light roasting produces relatively less bitterness and sweetness.

2. Moderate to shallow (urban) coking

Medium-light (city) Caramelization is a degree between light and medium color. This method stops processing after appropriately increasing the temperature and time, resulting in a slightly dark brown surface and retaining some original flavor. Medium-light caramelization produces a stronger taste and aroma while retaining a certain acidity.

3. Medium (American) Char

Medium (American) Caramelized coffee beans are roasted to a medium color with a darker brown on the surface. This method allows the sweetness and acidity to fully develop inside the coffee bean, forming a rich and balanced flavor. Medium roasting produces a soft, balanced, rich-tasting coffee.

4. Medium depth (Franz) coking

Medium-dark (François) Caramelization is a degree between medium and dark color. This method stops processing after appropriately raising the temperature, making the surface of the coffee beans darker and browner with a slight oily sheen. After this treatment, more bitterness, sweetness and a small amount of fruit acid will be produced inside the coffee beans. The coffee produced by this roasting method is rich and balanced.

5. Dark (Italian) Burnt

Dark (Italian) Caramelization refers to roasting coffee beans to a darker color, with a smooth and shiny surface. This method produces more bitterness and caramelized aroma inside the coffee beans, while reducing acidity and sweetness. The coffee produced by deep roasting has the characteristics of richness, fullness, bitterness, etc.

6. French (heavy flavor) burnt

French (Heavy Taste) Caramelization is an extremely deep roasting method that roasts the coffee beans to a very dark brown color with a noticeably shiny surface. This method produces a strong bitterness and caramelized aroma inside the coffee beans, while reducing the acidity and sweetness. The coffee produced by French roasting is rich, thick, and bitter.

7. Lightning City Scorch

Lightning City Roast is a color between medium-light and medium. This method is processed quickly at high temperature and stopped quickly, resulting in a light color on the surface of the coffee beans. Lightning City Roast retains some of the original flavor and produces a higher acidity and fresh taste.

8. Lightning Deep Coking

Lightning roasting is a degree between medium and dark. This method is processed quickly at high temperature and stopped quickly, resulting in a darker color on the surface of the coffee beans. Lightning roasting produces coffee with rich, strong, bitter and other characteristics.

The above eight coffee bean roasting methods each have their own characteristics. You can choose the roasting method that suits you according to your personal taste preferences to make your favorite coffee.
