What is the difference between cappuccino and cafe latte?

Cappuccino and latte are the two most commonly ordered Italian coffees in coffee shops. These two coffees are like twin brothers, and many customers and even baristas can’t tell them apart.

Different material ratios

The ingredients of cappuccino and latte are exactly the same: milk, coffee and espresso. The difference is that the milk foam of cappuccino accounts for at least half of the total cup volume, while the milk foam of latte should not exceed 10% of the total cup volume. In other words, cappuccino is mainly based on milk foam, while latte is mainly based on milk.

Different appearance

The milk foam of traditional cappuccino is thicker, fuller and smoother, and the coffee will not spill out even if you shake the cup left to right; latte only has a thin layer of milk foam, which is usually flush with the rim of the cup.

Different taste

Cappuccino has a thick and dense texture with a stronger coffee flavor, while latte has a stronger milk flavor and a relatively lighter coffee flavor.

To put it simply, cappuccino has more milk foam than latte, and latte has more milk than cappuccino. Usually, cappuccino is served in a smaller cup than latte, and latte has a lighter coffee taste than cappuccino. If the barista pays more attention to latte art skills and ignores the taste difference between cappuccino and latte, it is like putting the cart before the horse and losing the soul of cappuccino.
