Coffee Bean Roasting: Understanding the Different Roast Types

Roasting coffee beans is one of the most important steps in making a delicious cup of coffee. Different roasting types give coffee beans different flavors and tastes. In this article, we will focus on three common roasting types: light roast, medium roast, and dark roast.

First, light roast is a light roast, also known as "city roast". In this process, the coffee beans are heated to around 205°C (401°F) and only for a short time. Due to the relatively low temperature and less time, light roast retains most of the original flavor and acidity. This type of coffee usually has a bright and refreshing taste, floral aromas, and fruity acidity.



Secondly, medium roast is a degree between light roast and dark roast. It is also called "full city" or "American" roasting degree. "Full city" means that some of the original flavor is still retained at this stage, with more balanced and sweet characteristics. Moderate roasting at medium temperature changes the internal structure of the coffee beans, producing more oil and sugar. This type of coffee usually has a richer, softer and balanced taste, while also retaining some acidity.

Finally, dark roast is a heavier roasting method. In this process, the coffee beans are heated to above about 240°C (464°F) and are heated for a relatively long time. Due to the high temperature and long exposure to fire, dark roasting causes significant changes in the internal structure of the coffee beans and produces a large amount of oil. This type of coffee usually has a strong, bitter and even burnt taste, and the acidity is almost completely eliminated. Dark roast is suitable for people who like a strong taste and bitter style.

In short, when choosing coffee that suits your taste preferences, you need to consider the flavor characteristics brought by different roasting types. Light roasting retains the original flavor and acidity; medium roasting finds a balance between balance and sweetness; and dark roasting brings a strong bitterness and a strong taste. Whether you like fresh and bright, or prefer rich and bitter, the type of coffee bean roasting will have an important impact on the coffee experience you enjoy.
