Coffee Bean Growing Environment: From Tree to Your Cup

Coffee beans are seeds extracted from the fruit of the coffee tree, which go through a series of processing and roasting to become the coffee we know as coffee. During this process, coffee beans go through many environmental changes and processing steps from the tree to your cup.

First, let's look at what kind of environment coffee beans grow in. Coffee trees mainly grow in subtropical and tropical regions, usually requiring high altitudes, moderate sunlight, stable rainfall, and soil rich in organic matter. These conditions make countries such as Brazil and Colombia the world's major coffee producing countries.

Next, when the fruit is ripe, farmers pick it and remove the skin to expose the seeds inside, the coffee beans. This process is called peeling or dehulling, and is done in different ways: dry peeling (drying the whole fruit) or wet peeling (soaking and washing the pulp). The outer mucilage is then removed through fermentation or dehydration.

Finally, coffee beans need to be roasted to become the coffee we know as coffee. During the roasting process, coffee beans will experience different combinations of temperature and time to achieve different taste and aroma goals. Generally speaking, light roasting produces a more acidic and lighter taste; medium roasting is more balanced; and dark roasting brings a strong bitter taste and a full taste.

In summary, from the tree to your cup, coffee beans go through the process of planting, picking, peeling and roasting. Each step has an important impact on the quality of the final coffee. Therefore, when enjoying a cup of delicious and mellow coffee, please remember that there are countless efforts and skills behind it.
