Caffeine Content | Is Espresso High in Caffeine?

The caffeine content in coffee varies greatly. A study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology found that a 16-ounce (about 454 ml) cup of a famous brand of coffee contained 100 mg more caffeine than the same amount of other coffees. Studies have shown that even the same brand of coffee can have different caffeine content in each bottle, which can vary by up to 300 mg. Dr. London said that a standard 16-ounce cup of coffee contains between 90 and 225 mg of caffeine.

Is espresso the coffee that does not affect sleep and is the most fragrant? The caffeine content in espresso is not higher than that in other coffees just because of its strong taste.

Let’s first take a look at what’s unique about “Italian coffee culture”!

Morning coffee

Most Italians only drink coffee with high milk content before 11 a.m., such as Cappuccino (equal parts espresso, steamed milk and milk foam), Caffè latte (espresso with more steamed milk and less milk foam) and Latte macchiato (Latte Macchiato: add a portion of espresso to a cup of steamed milk and dense milk foam, often served in a transparent glass cup, so you can see the beautiful layered effect).

Coffee you can enjoy at any time

Caffè (the familiar espresso, Italians call espresso Caffè, and espresso means "made on the spot" in Italian), a small cup of strong black coffee. Italians are accustomed to drinking Caffè in the afternoon to refresh themselves, or after meals.

Changing the Italian Style of Espresso

Over the centuries, the strong espresso has been modified to include: Caffè macchiato (espresso with a small amount of foamed milk), Caffè corretto (“correct coffee”: an alcoholic espresso, usually with a small amount of liquor such as grappa or sambuca), Caffè americano (an espresso diluted with a large amount of hot water), and Caffè lungo (“long coffee”: a regular espresso brewed with more water for a longer time, which has more caffeine and bitterness than Caffè).

Unique coffee culture in each region of Italy

Sicily in southern Italy developed a coffee called Caffè d'un parrinu (an Arabic-style coffee flavored with cloves, cinnamon and cocoa);

Locals in Naples call their espresso Tazzulella 'e caffè, and serve it with a small glass of water.

Lesser-known is Le Marche in eastern Italy, where you can enjoy a coffee called Caffè anisette (anise espresso: coffee with anise liquor, perfect for cold winter mornings).

In addition, Trentino in northern Italy has a cold climate and is geographically close to Austria, so Cappuccino Viennese (Viennese cappuccino: the characteristic is that the coffee is covered with dense milk foam and flavored with chocolate and cinnamon powder) has become the coffee culture of local residents.

The caffeine content of espresso is the lowest among all coffee methods because the contact time between coffee and water is the shortest during the production process. The caffeine content of espresso is about 1/4 of that of ordinary single-origin coffee and 1/8-1/10 of that of instant coffee.

Coffee and tea are both hobby drinks. Because everyone has different brewing methods and preferences, the brewing concentration varies greatly. If you brew according to the method on the coffee packaging bag sold on the market, then 120cc of coffee generally contains 60 to 100mg of caffeine. This is the same as the caffeine content in a cup of espresso (30c).

If it is tea, sencha (120cc) contains 2omg of caffeine and black tea (120cc) contains 30mg of caffeine. Compared with tea, coffee does contain a higher caffeine content.

Some people say that if you drink espresso, you won’t feel sleepy anymore! Is this true?

Many people think that espresso has the most caffeine (but if you look at the beverage content, it’s not true);

Dark roasted coffee will contain more caffeine than light roasted coffee (not really, all roasting levels have similar caffeine content in the end)

Drinking coffee can also refresh you, but you have to use the right method

Advice from Ah Cheng, a heavy caffeine addict, drinking coffee and then taking a nap is better than drinking coffee or sleeping alone.

It takes 20 minutes for the human body to absorb caffeine. If you take a nap during these 20 minutes, you will feel refreshed when you wake up. If adenosine in the brain binds to receptors, people will feel tired. The structure of caffeine is very similar to adenosine, and it can bind to receptors, blocking adenosine and making people forget their fatigue. This is the principle of coffee's energizing effect.

When you feel tired, a lot of adenosine has already bound to the receptors, so drinking coffee will not be as effective.

The correct way to open it is: drink coffee, set an alarm for 20 minutes, and take a nap/close your eyes to relax. When you rest, the adenosine on the receptors will be cleared, and caffeine will be absorbed and bind to the receptors.

When I first started, coffee was a good way to stay awake, and I could basically stay awake until dawn with just one cup. Now, even if I drink four cups of pure strong coffee at night, I can fall asleep immediately.

It's not that drinking coffee makes you sleepy.
