Coffee bean tips for beginners

Introduction to coffee bean related terms:

Coffee Cherry

The fruit of the coffee tree can usually be harvested 4-5 years after planting. It is named because of its bright red skin and shape that resembles cherries.

Lentils

The coffee berry bag consists of two beans stuck together. One side is flat with a crack on it. Because the side that sticks together is flat, it is called flat bean or lentil bean.

Round Beans

As coffee berries grow, some berries contain only one seed. One of the pair of seeds inside is particularly well-developed and will fill the entire internal space of the coffee berry. It looks like two slightly smaller flat beans stuck together, making the oval coffee beans become round, and the yield is scarce.

Elephant Bean

Elephant beans are a mutation of the oldest variety, Depica, also known as giant beans. They are the largest coffee beans in the world, at least three times larger than ordinary coffee beans, and the coffee taste is usually bland.

Specialty Coffee

Specialty coffee refers to coffee that maintains the highest quality from bean to cup, also known as "specialty coffee" or "selected coffee". This has a lot to do with the coffee variety, planting altitude, and coffee processing method. In addition, "specialty coffee" needs to be strictly selected and graded. It has a hard texture, rich taste, and excellent flavor, and is considered selected coffee beans.

Arabica

Arabica is the earliest discovered variety and is currently the most important variety in the coffee market. The coffee has good quality but is not easy to care for. Arabica coffee beans cannot grow in harsh climates. Brazil is the most important producer of Arabica coffee.

Robusta

Robusta coffee has a high yield, with Vietnam being the largest producer. It is easy to care for and less susceptible to insects, but its quality is poor. Due to the quality issues of the coffee, the price of Robusta coffee in the market is half that of Arabica coffee, and it is often used as a filler.
