When it comes to drinking coffee, a real man must choose espresso. Since the invention of espresso in Cairo, Egypt in the early 15th century, the production method has never changed: 25 seconds, one ounce of coffee essence, not a second less, not a drop more. Take a sip and you will taste the soul of each coffee bean. It's a pity that modern people can hardly stand such a strong and passionate art. Colleagues in the office who have tried espresso think it is a Chinese medicine soup extract. What a pity. Talking about Land Rover, the Defender series that was born with the brand is like Espresso, worshipped by die-hard car fans but few people buy it. So the old British SUV company added more ingredients to this cup of espresso in the off-road world and created more flavors: such as the Range Rover family that combines luxury and individuality, and the Discovery family that takes into account both off-road capabilities and family practical functions. The Discovery IV is a car full of male hormones, just like American coffee made with espresso and water. It retains some of the off-road capabilities of the Defender while increasing comfort, but it is still a bit bitter and not suitable for most people's tastes. What about the new generation Discovery? Replace the water with hot milk, and the American coffee will turn into a Latte that you have to drink almost every day. The tradition of Discovery is that even-numbered generations have minor changes, while odd-numbered generations have major changes. The first two generations of Discovery were pure off-road vehicles, not positioned very high, and competed with Pajero and Prado; the next two generations of Land Rover Discovery became more and more luxurious, emphasizing comfort and versatility. In the new millennium, Land Rover launched a Range Rover Sport with the same platform, a price range that overlaps with Discovery, and a Range Rover look. How to distinguish between the two? The onlookers were a little confused. In the second decade after 2000, the Land Rover brand finally set the tone for the future of these two million-level brothers: since the Range Rover Sport was replaced in 2013 and clarified its "sports luxury" positioning, the new generation of Discovery has also determined its role as a "multi-functional full-size luxury SUV mainly for home use." So far, the Discovery family will follow the "multi-functional, home-oriented" route, and will be more practical and cost-effective than the Range Rover family. As an aside: the Range Rover family has just launched a mid-size SUV with a size between the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. Will the Discovery family follow suit? The new generation Discovery has gone its own way and said goodbye to its predecessor. However, since it has inherited the name "Discovery", some things have to be retained - such as the clamshell hood and stepped roof that have been continued from the first generation of models, and the prismatic grille on the Discovery 4. More importantly, the new generation Discovery has returned to the tradition of using the Range Rover platform developed during the "Project Jay" project of the Discovery 1 in 1989 (strictly speaking, the third and fourth generations of Discovery that use independent platforms are considered heretical). The new generation Discovery uses more aluminum than the current Range Rover (85% for Discovery and 75% for Range Rover), with only the subframe made of steel. The result is that the new car is up to 480 kg lighter (2.0T diesel model) - what a concept! The new Discovery 7 with full load may be lighter than the Discovery 4 without any passengers. The car is 20% lighter and much bigger. The new generation Discovery is more than one size bigger than its predecessor, with the same wheelbase as the current Range Rover and a height that is even higher than the Range Rover. To achieve this, we need to look at two aspects. First, it is the charm of aluminum, and second, the large steel chassis of the Discovery 4 is really not suitable for modern multi-purpose SUVs. The new generation Discovery should not have the terrible fuel consumption figures of its predecessors. After all, this is an era of pursuing high efficiency. If we compare the new generation Discovery with the Discovery IV, the changes are earth-shaking; if we look back at the history of the model, it is actually the defender of the original development concept of the Discovery, after all, it is a "more cost-effective" Range Rover (laughs). Before the launch, Jaguar Land Rover organized global media to taste the new Discovery in Utah, USA. With 24 hours of companionship, the new generation Discovery showed us its all-round new image. Previously, our President Li Anding participated in the UK test drive of the new generation of camouflaged vehicles ("Anding Insight" is better than the original - Land Rover's new generation Discovery off-road in Scotland). This time, the North American test drive road conditions are far less difficult than the Scottish mud-breaking trip. The approximately 600-kilometer journey is mainly on the US intercontinental highway, combining various road conditions. (Itinerary restrictions, some pictures provided by the manufacturer) The test drive schedule was very tight, so I didn't have much time to appreciate the new car. I can only talk about the things that impressed me. My first impression after getting in the car was that the interior space of the new Discovery is much better than the current Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4. The interior design style similar to the Range Rover and the more user-friendly comfort functions make people feel its exquisite side. The new car has so many technological configurations that it makes people wonder if Land Rover is showing off. The test drive car is equipped with a 10.2-inch slim central control screen with a resolution, multi-touch and responsiveness that has caught up with the level of common smartphones. The built-in Incontrol system is still familiar; the USB ports, 4G hotspots and mobile phone APP-controlled seat allocation functions throughout the car are quite interesting. From the airport, we drove east along Highway 89. The new generation Discovery, built on the new Range Rover platform, has a completely different driving experience on the road than the Discovery 4 - the inherent floating feeling of the non-load-bearing body is gone, replaced by a more comfortable and stable neutral driving experience than the current Range Rover Sport. The more modern steering power adjustment is easier to drive than all previous Discoveries, but the steering is a bit too accurate in high-speed conditions, which is a bit difficult. If you have driven in North America, you will definitely remember the exaggerated inclination on the curves of American highways. I found that I was still confident in turning at 70mph (112km/h), and the sufficient support provided by the suspension on the center of the curve gave the driver enough confidence to not need to reduce the throttle. If I have to nitpick, the slightly hard spring setting at the beginning caused my butt to experience the depth of every crack on the poorly maintained highway. In addition to the high-speed paved road test driving experience, the manufacturer also arranged bad road crossing, desert off-road and rock climbing projects. After a trial, you can feel that the biggest shortcoming of the new generation of Discovery's off-road performance is actually the tires - the 275/45 R21 tires of the sports package version of the Discovery we have are too thin, and the optional 22-inch big tires are basically unable to go off-road. I can understand that the manufacturer knows that people who buy Discovery will hardly do high-intensity off-road every day, but if you buy the top-equipped optional package, you must prepare a set of high-profile tires before going off-road, and the new Discovery's capabilities will not disappoint you. After experiencing various road conditions, I have a basic idea of the capabilities of the new generation of Discovery - while maintaining its medium and high intensity off-road capabilities, it has greatly increased its road driving comfort and fuel economy. Of course, I can't guarantee you whether the new car's durability under long-term high-intensity off-road conditions can compete with the Discovery IV, but are there really so many people who buy it and dig ditches every day? After the release of the new generation Discovery, the dividing line between Land Rover's million-level products has never been clearer. If you want a personalized sporty car, buy a Range Rover Sport; if you want a multi-purpose car for home use, buy the new Discovery. Those hardcore off-road fans don't have to be too disappointed, because Land Rover's latest generation "Espresso" Defender is not far away, so you must buy it. |
