As to why American coffee is called "pot water coffee" by Europeans, it has to do with the production of American coffee.
American coffee is actually espresso + hot water. The hot water dilutes the bitter taste of coffee and also makes the coffee's aroma lose more than half of its flavor. In the eyes of Europeans, especially Italians, it is like the water used to clean cups or coffee pots after drinking coffee.
Most theories about the origin of American coffee are related to American soldiers, but there are some discrepancies.
The first statement:
During World War II, American soldiers who arrived in Europe drank Italian coffee in cafes. Because it was too strong compared to the brewed coffee they usually drank, they would order a cup of hot water to make it lighter. Therefore, the category of "American coffee" came into being.
The second statement:
Coffee flourished in Italy. When it was introduced to the United States during the war, American soldiers became addicted to coffee. In order to meet the demand for quantity, they gradually evolved to drink more diluted coffee.
