Who discovered coffee beans?

The discoverer of coffee beans

Coffee is a popular drink that originated from coffee beans. So who discovered coffee beans? In this article, we will explore the history and legend of the coffee bean discoverer.

The legendary discoverer

According to a long-standing Arab legend, there was a shepherd named Kaldi in the 9th century AD. One morning, he noticed that his flock of sheep became unusually active after eating certain red berries. Curious, Kaldi tried the berries and felt refreshed.

Kaldi told the news to a monk living in a local monastery. The monk decided to study this strange berry and make it into a drink. After many experiments and blends, he finally succeeded in making the first cup of coffee similar to what we know today.

Pioneers in historical records

Although the Arabian legend provides an interesting and romantic story, historical records have different opinions on the identity of the discoverer of coffee beans. According to historians, the earliest written record of coffee beans appeared in the 15th century AD.

These texts, from Yemen and Ethiopia, mention a drink called qahwa. Although they don’t specifically mention how coffee beans were discovered, these records prove that a drink associated with coffee existed in the early Middle East.

Arabians and coffee

Both legend and historical records link the Arabs with coffee. In fact, in the 16th century, the Arabs began to grow and trade coffee beans on a large scale.

As time went on, the Arab region became one of the most important commercial centers at the time, and spread coffee to Europe and other places through maritime trade. Therefore, it can be said that the Arabs played an important role in promoting and popularizing coffee culture to a large extent.

in conclusion

While the coffee bean does have a romantic and mysterious discovery story, the true identity of the coffee bean discoverer remains a matter of debate. Whether it was the legendary shepherd Kaldi or the early growers and traders mentioned in historical records, they all brought us this delicious drink.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who made every cup of coffee possible for us!
