Qiyu Coffee|“Good coffee” won’t keep you awake all night!

At Qiyu Coffee, especially for customers who drink beverages at night, I always hear them say: I can’t drink coffee, otherwise I will suffer from insomnia again.

One can’t help but wonder, is coffee really that stimulating?

In fact, good coffee will not make you insomnia. Of course, this is related to your personal constitution and the quality of the coffee you drink.

01 | Half-life of caffeine

Generally speaking, for a person with normal physical condition, the half-life of caffeine in the body is about three hours after drinking coffee . After the half-life, the stimulation to the body or nerves is almost negligible . If you drink a lot of water and drain water after drinking coffee, the caffeine may not stay in the body for more than two hours. How could it keep you awake all night?

[ Half-life refers to the time required for half of the nuclei of a radioactive element to decay; the half-life of a drug generally refers to the time required for the maximum concentration of the drug in plasma to be reduced by half; the half-life of caffeine can be used as a reference. ]

As for the impact of the quality of coffee drinking on sleep, we still need to do a specific analysis.

02 | Correct extraction can reduce the precipitation of irritating substances

Coffee contains various ingredients, and extraction does not mean to extract all of them. Generally, there is such a rule: if the amount of coffee powder is fixed, the amount of soluble ingredients extracted is determined by the grinding degree and time. That is, the finer the grinding degree of the coffee powder, the longer the extraction time, and the more ingredients you get. However, there are ingredients we need and ingredients we don't need in coffee. The longer the extraction time, the easier it is to extract the bad ingredients we don't need.

In short, improper operation or incorrect coffee extraction will cause the precipitation of irritating substances.

Among these unwanted ingredients, the most important one is "tannin" , which should be called tannic acid. Green coffee beans contain 8% to 9% of tannin, and roasted coffee beans contain 4% to 5%.

03 | Deep roasting can also reduce the irritation of coffee

Most people think that dark roasted coffee is more stimulating and light roasted coffee is less stimulating, but this idea is completely wrong. Don't be fooled by the surface color of coffee. If you drink light roasted coffee before going to bed, it will keep you awake until dawn!

In fact, as the degree of roasting increases, the content of caffeine and tannin decreases, and the irritation decreases.

Tannins, which we don’t want to extract, are also the culprit for the astringency of coffee . They are both angels and demons. A small amount of tannins can bring out the sweetness and mellowness of coffee, and a small amount of coffee tannic acid also has a wide range of antibacterial effects! However, incorrect roasting, or too shallow roasting and incorrect extraction will increase the amount of tannins, and the demon will come into play, not only making the coffee full of astringency, but also making you unable to sleep all night!

04 | Drink it in time, the lower temperature will release the stimulating effect of coffee

Of course, the irritation of coffee is not only caused by the maker or roaster. Often, the wrong drinking method of the drinker is also one of the reasons for the irritation.

Coffee needs to be consumed quickly, preferably while it is still warm. The stimulating effect of coffee will often be released as the temperature of the coffee drops.

Therefore, good coffee, if roasted correctly, extracted correctly and consumed in time, can reduce the irritation of tannins or caffeine. Even if you drink coffee at night, it can help you sleep well!
