Roast level: compare with context

Light, medium and dark are useful but inconsistent labels.

Understand the choice

Different roasters use roast labels differently. Bean colour, internal development and roast history are not the same measurement. A darker-looking coffee may also be influenced by processing and surface oils.

Put it into practice

Compare coffees within one roaster’s range before generalizing. Record the roast date and brew behaviour. Change grind, water temperature or ratio one at a time based on taste.

Keep the conversation useful

Share your actual recipe or experience, identify the coffee or equipment and explain what changed. A clear question with measurements makes the discussion easier for others to answer.
