"Value for money" - A comparison of the taste of freshly ground coffee from Japan's three major convenience stores

For friends who like to drink coffee, when the coffee craving comes, the most convenient and cheapest way is to go to a convenience store and buy a cup to satisfy your craving. The coffee in Japanese convenience stores can be said to have its own characteristics, targeting people who like different flavors, and the price-performance ratio is very high.

Recently, Xiao T has tried the most popular American coffee and latte in the three major convenience stores in Japan. Now let me share a simple article with you~

7-11

Arabica dark roasted coffee beans are used, but the specific details of where the coffee beans come from are not yet known.

How to buy?

Hot coffee - buy it directly at the checkout counter, and the clerk will give you a coffee cup and you can operate the coffee machine yourself.

Iced coffee - First you need to go to the freezer and choose the type of coffee (mainly American and latte) and quantity (medium and large).

  • The cup of American coffee is "アイスコーヒー"
  • The cup of the latte is "アイスカフェラテ"

Americano

Personal recommendation: ★★

price:

  • Standard cup - 100 yen (same price for hot and iced)
  • Large cup - hot - 150 yen

Ice - 180 yen

It is very bitter at first, and the fruity sourness of the coffee is basically covered by the bitter taste, and there is no fruity sourness. And there is still a heavy bitter aftertaste after taking it.

latté

Personal recommendation: ★★★★

price:

Standard cup: - Hot - 150 yen

Ice - 180 yen

Large cup - hot - 200 yen

Ice - 250 yen

After taking a sip, you first feel the strong milk flavor, and then you feel a very burnt and bitter taste just like American coffee. However, because it is a latte, the fragrant coffee neutralizes it, so the overall taste is acceptable, but still bitter.

Family Mart

It uses deep roasted blended beans from four origins: Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, and Tanzania.

How to buy?

Hot coffee - can also be purchased directly at the checkout counter. The clerk will give you the coffee cup you want, and then you can operate the coffee machine yourself.

Iced coffee - different stores have different operations. Most of them require customers to go to the freezer to select the type and quantity themselves. Some stores give customers iced cups after payment at the checkout counter.

The cups for Americano and latte are the same, with both "アイスコーヒー" and "アイスカフェラテ" written on them.

Americano

Personal recommendation: ★★★★★

price:

  • Small cup: 100 yen (same price for hot or iced)
  • Medium cup - hot - 150 yen

Ice - 180 yen

  • Large cup - 180 yen (hot only)

The overall flavor is balanced, and it feels like a lot of effort has been put into roasting the coffee beans.

The bitterness and fruity sourness of the coffee are more suitable for my own taste, and the aftertaste has a refreshing fruity sour taste.

latté

Personal recommendation: ★★★

price:

  • Medium (only medium) - Hot - 150 yen Ice - 180 yen

It is claimed that it is made with 100% raw milk, but the milk flavor is relatively light when you take a bite. It is not as rich as the milk flavor of 7-11, and the overall taste is bland.

LAWSON

It uses coffee beans from the Ipanema farm in Brazil. Like FamilyMart, it is a blend of dark roasted beans from four origins: Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, and Tanzania.

How to buy?

You don’t need to get ice yourself, you can buy it directly from the cashier and the clerk will help you make it.

Americano

Personal recommendation: ★★★★

price:

Small cup: 100 yen (same price for hot or iced)

Medium cup: 150 yen (same price for hot and iced)

Large cup - 180 yen (hot only)

The first taste is a bitter coffee flavor with a light fruity sourness. The final aftertaste still has a little bitter taste, but it is not too strong and is acceptable.

Personal recommendation index: ★★★★★

price:

Medium cup: 150 yen (same price for hot and iced)

Large cup - 180 yen (hot only)

Made with 100% raw milk, the coffee has a rich milky flavor, paired with espresso with a slightly dark roasted bitter taste. I personally think it is the best latte among the three major convenience stores.

Summarize

Personal preference for coffee in the three major convenience stores

Americano

  • FamilyMart>Lawson>7-11

FamilyMart’s American coffee has a balanced bitterness and fruity sourness, which is suitable for those who don’t like coffee that is too bitter or strong.

Lawson or 7-11 would be suitable for those who like strong bitter taste.

latté

  • Lawson>7-11>FamilyMart

Friends who like to drink latte believe that they all like the rich and mellow taste of milk.

I personally think Lawson’s latte has a milky flavor without losing a hint of coffee bitterness, which is just the right choice.

However, it is difficult to satisfy everyone. The above are all personal subjective feelings. Please don’t criticize if you don’t like it! Interested friends may also try the coffee of different convenience stores to see which one you like!
