In the world of coffee, books are also indispensable. Whether you are a coffee lover, enthusiast, beginner, or barista, coffee shop owner, or coffee industry worker, if you want to have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of coffee, a few good books are essential. Here are a few recommended coffee books that are currently common in China, hoping to be helpful to the majority of coffee lovers.

NO.1. Teacher Han Huaizong’s new book “World Coffee Studies”

Recommended instructions:

"World Coffee Studies" is the latest work of professional coffee lover Han Huaizhong. It introduces the history of coffee, production areas, fine beans, roasting techniques, etc. It also details the development process of China's coffee industry and has special significance for Chinese coffee lovers.

In the book, the author details the four waves of coffee development and uses a large amount of experimental data to reveal the roasting and brewing techniques of world-renowned baristas. It combines humanities and science to satisfy the thirst for professional knowledge of coffee craftsmen and coffee fans.

★Complete presentation of the history of coffee: sorting out the origin, development and humanities of coffee

★Specialty coffee and its origin: Introduction to coffee bean varieties from Asia, Africa, Central and South America

★Coffee roasting and extraction: Using data and cases to explain the evolution of the third wave of roasting techniques, and exclusively predicting the fourth wave

★Coffee in China: A detailed account of the development of China's coffee industry and an introduction to China's major coffee producing areas

NO.2. "Coffee Tasting Encyclopedia"

Recommended instructions:

Whether in terms of professionalism, systematicness or text description effect, this book is the most recommended!

Seven years ago, it was and still is the most professional and detailed book on coffee in China.

It covers the entire process from coffee production, planting, processing to roasting and making. It is also the designated reference book for students of our Xiumen Coffee. The author of this book is Mr. Mamoru Taguchi, a veteran in the Japanese coffee industry. Although the content is a bit profound for beginners, it is a very good reference textbook for professional students and practicing baristas.

PS: For professional coffee practitioners, it is recommended to watch it at least three times. You will gain new insights each time!

NO.3. "Specialty Coffee Encyclopedia"

Recommended instructions:

Mr. Mamoru Taguchi's new work is not only a sister volume of "The Complete Guide to Coffee Tasting", but can also be said to be an upgraded version. From it, we can see Mr. Taguchi's spirit of "never tired of learning". At the age of over 70, he still keeps up with the international trend of coffee. The detailed examples of specialty coffee in the book are a supplement to "The Complete Guide to Coffee Tasting". The comparison of the two books also gives us a glimpse into the development of international specialty coffee in the past 10 years.

PS: This book is more suitable for friends who have a basic knowledge of coffee. It is recommended to refer to it in conjunction with "Coffee Tasting Encyclopedia".

Worth watching 3 times!

NO.4. "Selected Coffee"

Recommended instructions:

Compared with the first two professional and difficult books, this one is easy to read.

The book is illustrated and contains a lot of content, but the text is concise and accurate. It is a rare Chinese original coffee book. In Xiumen Coffee, it is generally recommended to students as a supplementary reference book of "Coffee Tasting Encyclopedia", which is suitable for entry-level coffee lovers.

NO.4. "Complete Coffee Knowledge Handbook"

Recommended instructions:

As a reference book for coffee students, the first three books are relatively systematic, while this book is more scattered, using the form of sub-themes to explain one by one. Although the content is not comprehensive, many of the details involved are also quite valuable for reference. In the intervals between reading the first few books, you may want to adjust your taste.

NO.5. You Don’t Know Coffee

Recommended instructions:

The name is quite intimidating! At first glance, I thought it was a "title party" book, but after a closer look, I found that it was a translation. The translator probably gave it a title to increase its popularity! However, the content is really good, with rich pictures and texts, and the pictures are hand-drawn, the images are cute, and the originally professional and boring topics are also explained clearly at a glance. Even beginners can easily accept the style!

This book is different from similar books with the attitude of "knowing the facts but not the reasons behind them". It embodies a rational, focused and humorous Frankenstein, taking you through the surface of coffee to explore the causes hidden behind the phenomenon and savor the fun in the details of the process. It accurately guides you in the colorful world of coffee, from the "cold knowledge" of the origin and variety, the "micro principles" of roasting and extraction to the personal use tips of various utensils, and even the small packaging bags are unraveled bit by bit. It is a truly informative, interesting and stylish encyclopedia of coffee knowledge.

No.6 "Coffee Science"

Han Huaizong's series, Han Huaizong's "Coffee Science: Secret History, Specialty Beans and Introduction to Roasting", slightly overlaps with the above two books in the evolution of coffee history, but this book focuses more on the current situation of the coffee industry and culture, roasting theory, etc., especially a section introducing Peet's in the United States, and talking about this coffee shop as the originator of American specialty coffee and its origin with Starbucks. If you are interested in coffee culture, this book is excellent~

I also bought Han Huaizong's "Coffee Science: Secret History, Specialty Beans and Introduction to Roasting", which slightly overlaps with the above two books in terms of the historical evolution of coffee, but this book focuses more on the current situation of the coffee industry and culture, roasting theory, etc., and especially has a section introducing Peet's in the United States, and talks about the origin of this coffee shop as the originator of American specialty coffee and Starbucks. If you are interested in coffee culture, this book is excellent~

If you are interested in the principles of coffee bean processing and roasting, this book "Unlocking the Secrets of Coffee with Science" is worth reading. In this book, I read for the first time the principles and process of making decaffeinated coffee, as well as some small knowledge related to coffee. It is easy and interesting to read ~ I learned a lot ~

Written by two Taiwanese girls who love coffee, "The Love and Obsession of Coffee Masters" visits many famous coffee shops in Taiwan, interviews founders/baristas, and listens to their stories about coffee. It's like watching a Taiwanese coffee documentary. Friends who want to open a coffee shop should not miss it~ Many stories in the book are very inspiring.

This is an introductory book for people who want to learn how to make hand-brewed coffee. "Experts teach you how to make good hand-brewed coffee". Some time ago, for some reason, I suddenly became interested in hand-brewed coffee. I read a lot of articles about hand-brewed coffee on various websites, forums and blogs, and bought some books. This book is more suitable for beginners. The step-by-step pictures are very detailed, and there are also very detailed explanations of various hand-brewed utensils and how to use them. There are also detailed annotations on the amount of beans used for different methods, the extraction water temperature, the extraction time, etc. There are also pictures of the coffee beans used in the article, and the appearance of the bean powder is also presented (for a novice like me who is very new and uses a hand-cranked grinder, it is difficult to grasp the coarseness of the beans. At the beginning, I was completely confused. The pictures in the book are very helpful at this stage.

NO.10. Open Your Own Cafe

Recommended instructions:

The development of the coffee industry has led to the opening of a large number of new coffee shops, and books about opening coffee shops are flying all over the place. But if you look closely, most of them are like catkins, which look beautiful when flying in the air, but when you catch them in your hands - they are just garbage.

This is the only practical book on opening a coffee shop that the author has found so far. The author visits those specialty coffee shops and talks with the coffee shop owners to learn about the process of a coffee shop from conception to reality, and then to its step-by-step growth. The shop opening experience of those coffee shop owners is definitely of great reference value for friends who want to open their own coffee shop.

NO.11. "The Notebook of a Coffee Maniac"

Recommended instructions:

The author is a coffee fanatic, but not an industry insider - so when he talks about coffee, he is less serious and more humorous, with rich pictures and text, and hand-drawn illustrations - this is a book that everyone can read, whether they are coffee professionals or enthusiasts, even ordinary customers of coffee shops or people who have no interest in coffee.

NO.12 "Barista Guide"

Recommended instructions:

Regarding espresso, 95% of domestic coffee shops cannot do without espresso, which is a key point in coffee making! David Hume's "Italian Espresso Professional Production", known as the "Italian Espresso Bible", unfortunately has no Chinese version. We at Hume Coffee organize materials for students by topic during class. After flipping through it, the only one worth recommending is this "Barista Guide". Although it is older and there are some controversial parts in the production part, it can also be used as a reference for beginners of Italian coffee.

NO.13 "The Infinite Possibilities of Latte Art Coffee Latte Art"

Recommended reasons:

This book selects 75 coffee latte art patterns, including unique latte art patterns such as butterflies, conch shells, and apples, and teaches all the knowledge and experience about coffee and latte art over the years, so that you can get a glimpse of the secrets of success of top latte art masters. For readers who love coffee latte art, or friends who run coffee shops, you can get the latest, most practical, and comprehensive coffee latte art techniques from this book. Even if you don't want to be a barista, you can make a latte art coffee for yourself and your loved ones at home!

NO.14 World Coffee Map

Recommended reason: This is a must-have book for coffee lovers, written by 2007 World Coffee Championship Champion James Hoffmann. This book will be divided by continents, and then gradually enter each country or production area. Rich content includes: the history of global coffee evolution and coffee development in each region; global coffee growth map and detailed maps of each region; illustrated characteristic differences of each production area in the same country; detailed explanations of coffee trade policies, fair trade coffee, organic coffee, etc., and beautiful photos of the production area that make you feel like you are there.

NO.15 Taiwan Professional Coffee Teaching Book "Ultimate Coffee"

Recommended reason: The author of this book, Silence, is well-known in the field of coffee in Taiwan. In order to allow more coffee-loving readers to further acquire professional and correct coffee knowledge, he established the Ugly Duckling Barista Training Center. Two years later, he once again presented the complete and systematic Barista teaching system and experience in the form of a professional coffee teaching book, so that coffee-loving friends can learn complete coffee knowledge - from picking a raw bean, to brewing a cup of coffee, to participating in professional coffee competitions, everything is included. Take you into the fantasy world of coffee

Features of this book: Professional explanation text with a large number of actual operation photos, so that readers can fully understand the professional knowledge of coffee. Detailed step-by-step illustrations clearly present each coffee brewing link.

NO.16 Practical reference book "Coffee Obsession"

Another interesting aspect of this book is

The author clearly states the subject of the article at the beginning: the coffee world is divided into two areas, commercial coffee and specialty coffee. The discussion in this book focuses on the category of specialty coffee.

Now that the theme of "specialty coffee" has been clarified, I am honored to find that TCSG has also included the chapter on origin description. Although the description of Chinese coffee is very brief, it covers almost all the necessary information and can even be considered as a relatively objective and true description in formal publications.

For example, the origin of coffee is clearly pointed out as Yunnan, Hainan, and Fujian. Even the proportion of coffee production and varieties in each origin are mentioned. Yunnan is the main producing area with more than 90%, followed by Hainan, and Fujian is a small amount. The Arabica species in Yunnan are mainly Katimo species, and Bourbon and Typica species can also be found with patient search. Even several major producing areas in Yunnan are mentioned, and the information is basically objective and true.
