Light roast vs dark roast: The key to choosing coffee beans

Light roast vs dark roast: The key to choosing coffee beans

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, and choosing the right coffee beans is the key to determining the taste of coffee. Light roasting and dark roasting are two common roasting methods, which have obvious differences in the color, flavor and taste of coffee beans.

First of all, light roasting and dark roasting differ in roasting time. Light roasting usually requires a shorter roasting time, generally about 10 to 12 minutes. This can retain more of the characteristics and flavor of the original coffee beans. In contrast, dark roasting takes a longer time, about 15 to 20 minutes. This will make the coffee beans darker and produce a more bitter and rich taste.

Secondly, there are also obvious differences in color, flavor and taste. Light roasting usually keeps the coffee beans brighter and lighter in color, and has a fresh and fragrant aroma such as flowers, fruits or nuts. At the same time, because it is not over-roasted, the acidity is relatively high and the taste is relatively refreshing. Dark roasting makes the coffee beans darker, sometimes even glossy. In terms of flavor, dark roasting usually has a strong aroma such as roasted wheat, chocolate or smoke, and is relatively bitter and has a stronger taste.

Finally, when choosing coffee beans, you need to decide based on your personal preferences and needs. If you like a fresh, bright taste and a fragrant aroma, then light roasting is a good choice. It is suitable for making hand-brewed coffee or cold brew coffee, which requires highlighting the original flavor and acidity. If you prefer a strong, bitter taste and coffee with a unique flavor, then dark roasting may be more suitable for you. It is suitable for making espresso or latte, which requires a complex taste with milk.
