Can coffee beans withstand high temperatures?

Coffee beans are a widely consumed food, and they are often used to make coffee. However, many people have doubts about whether coffee beans can withstand high temperatures. In this article, we will explore the heat resistance of coffee beans.

First of all, it should be clear that coffee beans are not as heat-resistant as other foods. In fact, under extremely high temperatures, such as over 200 degrees Celsius, coffee beans will burn and lose their original aroma and taste.

However, under normal roasting conditions (usually between 180-220 degrees Celsius), coffee beans can maintain their characteristics and quality relatively stably, mainly due to their internal structure and rich oil and aroma components.

When processing fresh coffee berries, the peel must first be removed to expose the "germ" wrapped inside. The moisture inside the germ is then evaporated and dried during the roasting process, which produces a series of complex chemical reactions. These reactions not only give the coffee beans their unique aroma and flavor, but also make the coffee beans resistant to high temperatures during the roasting process.

In addition, a thin film called "coffee oil" is produced during the roasting process. This oil is formed when the oil inside the beans is separated out and coated on the surface under the action of heat. This layer of oil can protect the beans from moisture and other foreign substances entering the inside. Therefore, when roasted at the appropriate temperature and stored properly, the coffee beans can maintain their quality relatively stably.

In summary, under normal use conditions (such as drinking, brewing, etc.), we can safely say that coffee beans have a certain resistance to high temperatures. However, under extreme high temperature conditions (such as direct exposure to fire or prolonged heating), it may still cause it to lose its original characteristics and quality. Therefore, when making or preserving coffee, please make sure to follow the appropriate operating methods and storage conditions.
