First of all, what is oil yield? Simply put, oil yield refers to the proportion of oil released from coffee beans during the roasting process to the total weight. When the roaster puts the green beans into the roaster, as the temperature rises and the time increases, chemical changes begin to occur inside the coffee beans, and aroma and oils are gradually released. These aromas and oils are often considered to be the "essence" that can bring people a pleasant feeling when drinking. Therefore, when choosing to buy or evaluate a high-quality coffee, we usually pay attention to its oil yield.


Secondly, there are obvious differences in oil yield between coffee beans of different types and origins. Generally speaking, medium-roasted coffee beans usually have a higher oil yield. This is because medium roasting can fully release the internal oil while retaining the original flavor of the coffee beans. In contrast, lightly roasted coffee beans tend to have a lower oil yield, while deep roasting will cause excessive oil loss. In addition, coffee beans of different origins and varieties will also have an impact on the oil yield. For example, Arabica coffee beans produced in Brazil, Colombia and other countries usually have a higher oil yield.

Finally, how to take advantage of the high oil yield when making drinks? First of all, you should pay attention to controlling the grinding coarseness and brewing time. Since a high oil yield means that more aroma and taste substances are released into the water, you need to adjust the parameters appropriately during the brewing process to ensure that a sufficiently rich and balanced flavor is extracted; secondly, choose the right temperature for brewing, and try to avoid using overheated water to avoid over-extraction of oils and bitter substances. Finally, coffee beans with a high oil yield are usually suitable for making special coffee drinks such as strong and full-bodied espresso or latte.
