Coffee Beans vs. Coffee Grounds: What’s the Difference?

Coffee Beans vs. Coffee Grounds: What’s the Difference?

Coffee beans and coffee powder are two different stages in the coffee making process. Although they are both extracted from the coffee plant, they are clearly different in form, purpose, and processing.

First of all, coffee beans refer to whole coffee seeds that have not been ground or processed. These seeds are usually shaped like nuts, and the color of the surface may vary depending on the variety, such as light yellow, dark brown or black. When we buy packaged whole coffee beans, we can usually see that there is a layer of gloss on the surface and it remains relatively dry.

In contrast, coffee powder is the product of coffee beans that have been ground into fine particles. Depending on the type and purpose, it can be divided into several levels: fine (esPresso), medium (medium) and coarse (coarse). These levels determine the method used and taste characteristics in the final drink.

Secondly, there are also differences in usage. Since coffee powder has been processed into particles, we do not need to grind it again and can use it directly for brewing. However, coffee beans need to be ground into suitable particle sizes before use in order to brew the ideal taste and flavor.

Finally, the processing methods are also different. After picking, coffee beans usually go through a series of processes such as washing, peeling, fermentation, and drying. These steps help maintain the freshness and quality of the beans and make them better preserved. Coffee powder is obtained by mechanically grinding the processed coffee beans in special equipment.

In summary, although coffee beans and coffee powder are extracted from the same plant, they are obviously different in form, use and processing. Understanding these differences will help us better choose and use them and enjoy the pleasant experience of delicious coffee.
