Coffee Bean Classification and Characteristics: Learn about the different types and characteristics of coffee beans

Coffee beans are the raw material for making coffee. They have different types and characteristics. Coffee beans can be divided into multiple categories based on factors such as origin, processing method and taste.

First of all, from the origin point of view, there are two main varieties of common coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are the most common and popular type. They are usually grown in high altitudes and require warmer and more humid climate conditions. This type of bean has characteristics such as acidity, floral aroma and smooth taste. In contrast, Robusta beans are more tolerant to harsh environmental conditions and grow better in low altitudes. Robusta beans have a strong and bitter taste and a higher content of caffeine.

Secondly, the processing method will also have an impact on the coffee beans. Dry processing and wet processing are the two main methods. Dry processing refers to drying the whole ripe fruit until the moisture content reaches the ideal level before shelling; while wet processing is to peel the fruit first, and then ferment, wash and dry it. The difference between these two methods will lead to differences in the taste of coffee beans. Dry-processed beans usually have a stronger and natural fruity aroma, while wet-processed beans are more refreshing and have a floral aroma.

Finally, coffee beans can also be classified according to the degree of roasting. Generally speaking, there are three levels of roasting: Light Roast, Medium Roast, and Dark Roast. Light roasting usually retains the characteristics of the original coffee beans, with higher acidity and a distinct single flavor; medium roasting retains certain characteristics while adding some sweetness; dark roasting makes the coffee beans more bitter and produces a unique and strong flavor.

In short, when choosing coffee that suits your taste, we can make choices based on different types and characteristics. Whether it is Arabica or Robusta, dry or wet processing, light roasted or dark roasted, they all have their own characteristics and flavors. I hope that by understanding the classification and characteristics of coffee beans, it can help everyone better choose and taste coffee.
