Many people are used to drinking coffee to stay awake, but if they drink it too late, they will not be able to sleep. However, recent studies have completely overturned many people's existing ideas. A 14-year study in the United States found that drinking coffee close to bedtime does not hinder sleep, and the most likely culprits of insomnia are "alcohol" and "nicotine". Drinking alcohol within 4 hours before bedtime is more likely to disrupt sleep than caffeine; and nicotine, which is inhaled when smoking cigarettes or e-cigarettes, especially at night, has a greater impact on insomnia. According to the Daily Mail, a joint study by Florida Atlantic University, Harvard University, Emory University and Mississippi Medical Center found that there is no strong correlation between coffee and insomnia. The study lasted for 14 years and involved 785 African Americans, none of whom had a history of sleep disorders. Each person wore a wristband sensor to monitor sleep and wrote a diary to record their sleep, feelings, diet, smoking, drinking and other items at night. Although there may be errors in self-reporting, the researchers are confident in the consistency of the results. Even after controlling for other factors that may affect sleep, such as age, gender, obesity, whether one has work or school the next day, depression, anxiety, and stress, the results still show that "caffeine has little effect on sleep." According to the research subjects' reports, sleepless nights usually occur after drinking, especially when drinking too close to bedtime. Although drinking does affect sleep, it is not as bad as nicotine. The study showed that smokers and e-cigarette users slept 43 minutes less on average than non-smokers.
