How to make coffee grounds compost: Make your own fertilizer and easily improve plant growth!

People who drink coffee at home usually throw away the coffee grounds directly, but did you know that these seemingly discarded coffee grounds can actually be used to make high-quality fertilizers to help improve the growth of plants. This article will introduce a simple and easy method that allows you to easily use coffee grounds to make your own fertilizer.

Prepare tools and materials

First, we need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • Fresh coffee grounds
  • A large bowl or container
  • A spatula or spoon
  • A breathable container (such as a plastic bucket)
  • A source of water (filtered water is best)
  • PH test paper (optional)

Step 1: Collect fresh coffee grounds and clean them

First, we need to collect fresh coffee grounds. You can collect enough coffee grounds from your coffee machine or hand brewer at home. Make sure these coffee grounds are clean and have no creamer or sugar added.

Next, place the collected coffee grounds in a large bowl or container and rinse it with clean water to remove any impurities that may be left in it.

Step 2: Composting process

Pour the cleaned coffee grounds into a well-ventilated container and stir gently with a spatula or spoon to distribute them evenly.

Then, add a moderate amount of water between each layer. Be careful not to add too much water, which can cause problems such as excessive moisture and mold. If you have pH test paper, you can test whether the mixture is acidic (ideally 6.5-8.0). If it is more acidic, you can add a small amount of lime to adjust it.

Next, place the container in a well-ventilated area and keep it moderately moist. Every once in a while, gently stir the mixture with a shovel or spoon to promote oxygen circulation.

Step 3: Composting and use

The entire composting process takes about 2-4 weeks. When the coffee grounds are completely decomposed and appear like soil, it means that the composting is complete.

At this point, you can use the compost in your home garden, potted plants or vegetable garden. Simply spread it evenly around the plants and gently bury it in the soil.

Precautions

  • Avoid using too much coffee grounds: Although coffee grounds are beneficial to plants, using too much of them may cause the soil to become too acidic. Therefore, make sure to balance the ratio of coffee grounds with other organic materials before applying.
  • Do not apply untreated coffee grounds directly: Untreated coffee grounds may cause plant burns. Therefore, make sure to compost them before using.
  • Apply according to plant needs: Different types of plants have different fertilizer requirements, so before applying coffee grounds as fertilizer, please first understand the nutrient requirements of the plants you are growing and adjust the amount accordingly.

By making your own fertilizer from coffee grounds, you can not only reduce waste, but also provide a rich source of nutrients for your plants. Try this simple method to easily create high-quality fertilizer and improve plant growth!
