Coffee beans: varieties, roasting and brewing tips

Coffee bean varieties

Coffee beans are one of the most popular beverages in the world, and there are many different varieties. These varieties are usually classified according to origin, flavor and purpose.

1. Arabica: Arabica is the most common coffee bean variety, accounting for about 70% of the global market share. It is usually grown in high-altitude areas such as Colombia, Brazil and Ethiopia. Arabica coffee has a lower caffeine content and higher acidity, and has a smooth taste with a floral and fruity aroma.

2. Robusta: Robusta is another common coffee bean variety, accounting for about 30% of the global market share. It is usually grown in low-altitude areas such as Vietnam, Brazil, and Indonesia. Robusta coffee has a higher caffeine content and lower acidity, and tastes strong and bitter.

Baking process

The roasting process of coffee beans has an important impact on their taste and flavor. The following are common roasting degree classifications:

1. Light Roast: Light roasting usually stops the coffee beans immediately after the first crack, which allows the beans to retain higher acidity and less bitterness. Light roasting produces a light coffee with a distinct floral and fruity aroma.

2. Medium roast: Medium roast heats the coffee beans until they stop before the second crack, which gives the beans a more balanced sweet and sour taste and rich flavor. Medium roast produces a smooth coffee with a chocolate or nutty aroma.

3. Deep/Dark Roast: In deep/dark roasting, the fire will continue to be added until the second crack, which will make obvious oil visible on the surface of the coffee beans. Deep roasting produces a strong bitter taste and roasted aroma, but with lower acidity.

Brewing tips

The correct brewing technique can improve the taste and flavor of coffee. Here are some common brewing methods:

1. Drip Brewing: Drip Brewing is one of the most common home brewing methods, which can produce a fragrant and balanced coffee. Simply place the ground coffee in a dripper and slowly pour in heated water.

2. French Press: The French Press makes rich, creamy coffee. Put the coarsely ground coffee beans into the French Press, add an appropriate amount of boiling water and wait for a few minutes, then gently press the filter with the piston.

3. Moka Pot: Moka Pot produces rich, Italian-style coffee. Put coarsely ground coffee beans into the filter basket of the Moka Pot, add appropriate amount of water and heat the pot on the stove. After the water evaporates and forms pressure, you can enjoy it.

4. Espresso Machine: The espresso machine produces espresso coffee with a rich taste and delicate cream. Finely ground coffee beans are placed in the filter basket and high-pressure water is used to extract espresso through the powder.

Conclusion

Understanding different varieties of coffee beans, roasting degrees, and brewing techniques is essential to becoming a professional coffee lover. By trying different varieties and methods, you can discover your favorite tastes and flavors and adjust the brewing parameters according to your personal preferences. Enjoy a delicious cup of coffee!
