Coffee Basics: Learn about its origins, types and brewing methods

The origin of coffee

Coffee is a beverage made from coffee beans that originated in Africa. According to legend, in the 9th century AD, a shepherd named Kaldi found that his sheep became unusually active after eating a kind of red berry. Curious, he tried the berry and found that it could keep people awake and energetic. This is the origin of coffee.

Types of coffee

The two main varieties commonly seen on the market are Arabica and Robusta. Arabica coffee beans are produced in smaller quantities, but are of higher quality, with a more delicate and aromatic taste; while Robusta is produced in larger quantities, is relatively cheap, and has a bitter taste.

In addition to these two main varieties, there are also some special types of coffee beans in different regions, such as Xiadao, Mazaduo, etc.

Brewing method

1. Drip filtration method:

The drip method is one of the most common and easiest methods. Simply put the ground coffee into the filter paper, then slowly pour hot water into the filter cup and wait for the coffee to flow out through the filter paper.

2. French Press:

The French press is a traditional brewing method. Put the ground coffee powder into the French press, add the appropriate amount of hot water, and stir it slightly. Then cover the filter and piston, and slowly push the piston down to allow the coffee liquid to flow out through the filter.

3. Espresso:

Espresso is one of the common methods for making strong, full-flavored coffee. It requires the use of a special espresso machine or manual operation. Finely ground coffee powder is put into the filter basket and shaken evenly; then high-temperature and high-pressure steam is used to brew it through the filter basket.
