Since the first roastery in Seattle in 2014, Starbucks has built five roasteries in six years, five of which opened in the three years between 2017 and 2019. The one that will officially open in Chicago at 9 a.m. local time on November 15 will be the sixth roastery and the largest in the world. Starbucks Chicago Roastery covers an area of 35,000 feet (about 3,250 square meters), has five floors, and the overall design style is relatively modern. Unlike other roasting shops, the coffee beans produced by Chicago Roasters are only sold in this shop. There is a special bar in the shop that sells packaged coffee. After selecting the coffee, the barista will use a bean shovel to scoop the freshly roasted coffee beans into the packaging bag in front of you. The most eye-catching part of every roasting workshop is the bean storage tank in the middle. The Chicago roasting workshop is no exception. The hollow design of the middle pipe is quite eye-catching, and it is also the tallest device in the world's roasting workshop. An elevator surrounding the bean storage tanks was also built in the workshop, allowing visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery more conveniently and comfortably. Every Starbucks store has painting elements, and this one is no exception. The wall of the side staircase depicts the working scenes of coffee growers. The Chicago Roastery has specially set up a "Barrel-Aged Coffee Bar" where coffee beans aged in wine barrels are presented in different ways, such as whiskey barrel-aged cold brew coffee. Starbucks also launched its own version of the flavor wheel, which is located on the third floor of the Chicago Roastery. When former Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz was in office, he had vowed to build more than 20 roasteries around the world. After Kevin Johnson took office, he drastically reduced the staff and budget, and also temporarily slowed down the pace of roastery construction. Therefore, the Chicago roastery may be the last Starbucks roastery in the short term. |
