Recently, a coffee friend sent me a private message asking how to choose coffee beans. Many coffee friends may want to know about this. So, facing the dazzling products on the market, how should we do it? See below. First of all, everyone knows that if you want to drink good coffee, coffee beans are the key. So how can you buy good coffee beans? In fact, the criteria for selecting coffee beans are similar to those for selecting tea leaves. If you want the most expensive and exquisite tea leaves, you need to go to the origin to buy the best quality new tea produced that year. The same is true for coffee. The top coffee beans often require you to select them in the origin of this variety of coffee, or entrust a specialized foreign supplier to purchase them. 1. Look. If you are buying single-origin coffee beans, you can grab a handful of coffee beans at random to see if the color of each coffee bean is consistent, the size of the beans is even, and the shape is the same. This is to prevent buying inferior products disguised as mixed beans. After all, there is really a mix of good and bad on the market now. However, if it is a mixed bean, then its size and color are different, which is normal, so don't worry too much. Finally, it is important to know whether you want to buy strong, medium-deep roasted or light-roasted coffee, because strong and medium-deep roasted coffee beans will produce oil, which is normal, but if lightly roasted beans produce oil, it means they have deteriorated, and not only will their aroma be reduced, but they will also have a astringent and sour taste. ============================================ 2. Smell. The reason for smelling the aroma of coffee beans is to determine whether it is fresh, because once the best tasting period is missed, the aroma will slowly disappear and the taste will be greatly reduced. So smell the beans to see if they have the aroma of coffee beans. If they do, it means the coffee beans are fresh enough. If the aroma is very weak, or even has a greasy smell similar to peanuts that have been stored for a long time, it means that the beans are completely stale. Don't choose them, because no matter how much effort you put in, you will never be able to make good coffee. =========================================== 3. Peel. Peel the coffee beans by hand. If the beans are fresh, it is easy to peel them with a crisp sound. If the beans are not fresh, it takes a lot of effort to peel them. After peeling, you can check whether the roasting degree is uniform. If it is uniform, the color of the outer skin and the inner layer of the coffee bean is the same. If the color of the outer layer is much darker than the inner layer, it means that the roasting temperature may be too high, which will also affect the aroma and taste of the coffee beans. ============================================ 4. Chew. When choosing, it is best to take one or two beans and chew them in your mouth. If the beans are very crisp and make a crisp sound when chewed, it means that the beans are not damp; if in addition, they can still leave a lingering fragrance in your teeth, then they are top-quality! ============================================= 5. Notes Many times, when we are shopping for coffee beans, we find that the selection in physical stores is limited, so we turn to online stores. Although we cannot see the real thing before buying, and cannot perform the selection steps such as looking, smelling, peeling, and chewing, we can still choose from the following aspects when shopping online. Of course, these aspects also apply to shopping in physical stores, because some beans are sold in bags and we cannot look closely. —————————————————————————– 01. Origin Some online stores may use coffee beans that are not from their origin, such as Blue Mountain coffee, but its origin is not Jamaica. However, this does not mean that coffee from non-originating places is bad. Due to different climates, the taste will be slightly different. In many cases, coffee from non-originating places is cheaper. If you are not very picky, it is okay to taste the taste of different origins. ————————————————————————— 02. Coffee beans emit different aromas at different degrees of roasting, and the best roasting time is different. Basically, the longer the coffee beans are roasted, the darker and more mellow its color and taste will be. It depends on personal taste. Some people like light flavors, while others like strong flavors. If you really don’t know what roasting degree to choose, you can also choose medium roasting, because medium roasting is suitable for most coffees and is a taste that everyone can accept. —————————————————————————- 03.Packing date Everyone knows that coffee beans, like all commodities, have a shelf life, and freshness is very important. Before buying coffee beans, be sure to check the roasting date on the package. Generally speaking, coffee beans are best tasted within 10-30 days after roasting, and the longest period is no more than two months, so it is recommended to drink them within one or two months. ————————————————————————— 04. Stores and brands Needless to say, some coffees may be mixed with other types of coffee to reduce costs. So be careful. For example, mixing cheaper coffee beans with more expensive coffee beans, or mixing coffee beans of the same variety but poor quality with good quality coffee beans, will seriously affect the taste. So when buying coffee beans, try to choose a guaranteed store or brand. —————————————————————————- 05. Price In fact, the price of the same type of coffee is similar, so if some brands sell the same type of coffee very cheaply, you should be careful. After all, you get what you pay for. Generally speaking, good coffee is unlikely to be sold at a discount, so coffee lovers must be careful not to be blinded by the cheap price. We should just buy it at the regular price. Finally, I hope this article will be helpful to coffee lovers. Spreading coffee culture is my hobby. If you have any coffee questions, you can leave a comment and we can learn and discuss together! |
