Coffee bean processing: the transformation from raw to aromatic

Coffee bean processing: the transformation from raw to aromatic

1. The original state of coffee beans

Coffee beans are seeds picked from coffee trees. They have a green or yellow appearance. These raw coffee beans are often called "green beans" because they have not yet been processed or roasted.

2. Remove the peel and pulp

Before coffee beans can be processed, the outer skin and pulp must first be removed. This process is usually done mechanically, such as using a hulling machine to peel off the outer layer.

3. Fermentation and cleaning

Once the outer skin and pulp have been removed, the next step is the fermentation and washing process, which is designed to remove the mucilage that remains on the surface of the coffee beans and help improve the taste.

4. Drying

After fermentation and washing, the coffee beans need to be dried to reduce the moisture content. There are several different drying methods to choose from, including air drying, sun drying, and mechanical drying.

5. Remove residue

During the drying process of coffee beans, some residues may adhere to the surface of the beans. These residues may include impurities, bark or other unwanted substances. Therefore, before the final processing, the coffee beans need to be screened and cleaned to ensure their quality.

6. Baking

Roasting is the process of transforming coffee beans into the brown color we are familiar with and giving them their characteristic aroma and taste. Different degrees of roasting will produce coffee with different flavor characteristics.

7. Cooling and packaging

Once the roasting process is complete, the coffee beans need to cool for a while to ensure their stability. Then, they can be packaged and prepared for sale to consumers.

8. Grinding and Brewing

The final stage is to grind or grind the coffee beans and use them to make various types of coffee drinks. The fineness of the grind and the brewing method will directly affect the taste and mouthfeel of the coffee.

Summarize

From raw to aromatic, coffee beans go through a complex series of processes. Each step has an important impact on the quality of the final product and needs to be carefully controlled and handled. Only after careful processing and roasting can we get the delicious coffee we love.
