Coffee bean production: from cultivation to roasting

Coffee bean production: from cultivation to roasting

1. Cultivation of coffee beans

The cultivation of coffee beans is the first step in the production process of coffee beans. It requires suitable climatic conditions and soil quality to ensure good growth. Generally speaking, coffee plants prefer warm and humid climates, with altitudes between 800 meters and 2000 meters.

2. Coffee bean varieties

There are two main types of coffee beans in the world today: Arabica and Robusta. Arabica is the most common and popular variety, prized for its rich flavor. Robusta has a stronger and more bitter taste.

3. Coffee bean picking

Picking is one of the important links that determine the quality of coffee. Usually, picking can only be carried out when the maturity reaches more than 80%. This means that farmers need to carefully observe each fruit and manually choose the right time to pick it.

4. Coffee Cherry Peeling and Fermentation

The picked coffee cherries need to be peeled and fermented. First, the coffee cherries are placed in a water tank and the outer pulp is removed by mechanical force. Then, the remaining beans together with the inner pulp are placed in a specific container for fermentation.

5. Dry the coffee beans

After fermentation, the coffee beans need to be dried to reduce the moisture content. This can be done either naturally or using specially designed machines. Natural drying usually takes a long time and requires the right climate conditions.

6. Coffee Bean Roasting

Roasting is one of the most critical and challenging steps. Different degrees of roasting will produce coffee beans with different taste and aroma characteristics. Light roasting will retain more of the original flavor, while deep roasting will make it more bitter and strong.

7. Coffee tasting and rating

To ensure quality control, each batch of coffee beans produced needs to be tasted and graded. Professional baristas will judge the quality of the coffee based on factors such as aroma, taste and aftertaste, and give corresponding scores.

8. Coffee bean packaging and sales

Finally, after tasting and grading, the high-quality coffee beans will be packaged and prepared for sale. This usually involves choosing the right packaging materials and design, and ensuring that the product is not damaged during transportation.

Summarize

From cultivation to roasting, every step has an important impact on the quality of the final coffee beans. Only by carefully managing each step can you produce a satisfying and unique coffee.
